Disability Insurance

Last updated

Banzai’s disability plan is through Unum. If you become sick or injured and cannot work or need to significantly cut your hours, you can receive up to 60% of your earnings (with a cap at $1,200 per week or $6,000 per month) through disability coverage.

There are two kinds of disability insurance: short and long-term disability. The two are extremely similar in coverage and qualifications, and Banzai provides both. You can enroll in Disability Insurance the first of the month following your first day of active employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Copied to clipboard!
  • What’s an elimination period?
If you become injured, disability payments won’t kick in right away. You’ll need to be sick or injured for a set amount of time, called the elimination period, before you can begin to receive them. This period is 14 days for short term and 90 for long term. You do not have to stop working during this period.
  • Does having a baby count as a disability?
Post-natal recovery does qualify as a short-term disability, so you must file a claim through Unum for paid maternity leave (4 weeks at 60% pay). Banzai will provide an additional two weeks of maternity leave pay (100% of your current salary).
  • Who pays for this coverage?
The cost of disability insurance is covered by Banzai 100%.
  • How does Unum decide how much I’ll get?
First, Unum determines a weekly payment as either 60% of your weekly income (as defined by last year's w2) or $1,200—whichever is less. Then they deduct other sources of income (other disability income, money from a settlement, insurance, retirement payments, etc.) to get your final weekly payment.
  • Do I have to stop working to receive payments?
No, but you must still meet Unum’s definition of disabled. Unum will pay the percentage of your earnings that you are losing from your disability up to $1,200 per week or $6,000 per month.
